Gov. Sani Bello Condemns Encroachment of Lands Belonging to Schools in Niger State
The governor of Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, has condemned the high rate of encroachment on lands belonging to educational institutions across the state.
Governor Bello, who spoke at the weekend when the Parents’ Teachers Association, PTA, of Police Secondary School, Minna, paid him a visit, said it was unfortunate that those who go out of their way to encroach on such lands do not appreciate the relevance of educational institutions to the socio-economic development of the state.
According to him, if the people cannot or are not willing to contribute to the growth of those schools, it behooves on them from moral perspective not to encroach into the schools’ land.
He disclosed that within one month of assuming office, he has received three reports of people encroaching on lands belonging to schools stressing that previous government was to be blamed for not erecting perimeter fences to protect them.
In view of the development he directed that the Urban Development Board and Ministry of Lands should do a follow-up of land encroachment at the Police Secondary School and see how it could be reclaimed.
Governor Bello noted that because land matters were complicated, his government would listen to the encroachers while assuring that necessary action would be taken against those who were adequately compensated but chose to remain on the property rather than relocate from the premises of the school.
Earlier, the PTA chairman, Malam Zubairu Abdulrauf Idris, said they visited to intimate the state government on the level of encroachment on the school’s land and that the school had been submerged by a barrage of buildings after compensation were paid to the encroachers to relocate.
