The 2013 National Unity Polo Tournament in Abuja [Photos]

Fifteen teams from across the country came together Monday the 20th of May to compete in the fourth edition of the Abuja Polo 2013 National Unity Tournament.

The tournament was organised by the Abuja Guards Polo Club in collaboration with the ministries of youth, culture and tourism, which lasted all through the week, from Monday 20th to - Sunday 26th of May at the Guards Polo Club by Brigade Stables, Abuja.

This year’s edition was part of the Democracy Day celebration and the turnout was very impressive.

The Captain, Abuja Guards Polo Club, Mr Mustapha Junaidu noted that "Abuja, being the centre of unity, was a very befitting location for the tournament".

Special guests included the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mr Edem Duke, Minister of Youth and Development, Mr Inuwa Abdulkadir and Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu which all sent representatives to the event.

AITEO Energy were the major sponsors of the tournament last year and the biggest sponsors the tournament has ever had. This year Unity Bank and Dangote Group were the major sponsors with Fidelity Bank, NEXIM, MTN, Niger State Government, NDIC, ALS Place and Corsa Motorsports Club as Co-Sponsors.

The Commander of the Guards Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Emmanuel Atewe also showed lots of support and ensured adequate security was present for everyone.

There were four main cups competed for which includes: The Guards Challenge, the Guards Brigade Trophy, the Legislative Shield and the President’s Cup and a  new cup introduced in this year’s tournament known as the ‘Calban Maina Cup’ in honour of the Governor of Niger, Dr Babangida Aliyu a major partner of the event.
