The community recounted their ordeal when Senator representing Niger East, David Umaru, paid a sympathy visit to the area.

They said they lost virtually all they had laboured for in this year's cropping season.

The District Head of Kuta community, Alhaji Garba Bangajiya, who welcome Umaru on behalf of the people, spoke of how his palace was partly destroyed by the rain storm, expressing shock at the extent of the devastation.

The traditional ruler expressed appreciation to the Senator for finding it expedient to share in the pains of the people. He also appealed to the state government to come to the aid of the victims to enable them to pick up their lives again.

"Many of the affected villagers would need assistance to cushion the effects of what they have lost in the areas of provision of building materials, clothes, mattresses, food, mats and blackest," the community leader told their guest.

Another victim, a civil servant, Danjuma Ahmed Kuta, lamented his loss to the rainstorm, adding that he took a bank loan in December last year to build his house that has now been blown off and appealed for assistance.

According to Danjuma, "When the rain started on Saturday night it became very windy and before we could wake up to see what was happening, the roof of my house had been blown off and our property destroyed by the downpour".

Meanwhile, Senator Umaru has called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to come to the aid of victims.

Umaru, who estimated the loss at N500 million, said the people needed assistance as over 1,000 villagers have been rendered homeless, describing the disaster as monumental and needed the intervention of NEMA and the state government.
