Olympic Sprinters Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell Both Test Positive For Banned Substances

Sprint stars have tested positive for banned substances. USA Sprinter Gay and Jamaican Powell have withdrawn from IAAF world championships.

Athletics’ credibility was in tatters last night when it was confirmed that two of the biggest names in sprinting had tested positive for banned substances.

The fastest man this year is to withdraw from next month’s world championships in Moscow, where he would have challenged Usain Bolt in the 100m and 200m.

Fighting back tears, Gay, 30, would not reveal the substance involved, but said: “I don’t have a sabotage story. I don’t have any lies. I don’t have anything to say to make this seem like it was a mistake. I basically put my trust in someone and I was let down. Sometimes a human being naturally trusts somebody. That’s what people do.”

Powell, 30, one of the top sprinters over the past decade, denies taking oxilofrine and professed his innocence over the positive test taken at last month’s Jamaican national trials in Kingston.

He said: “I want to say to my family, friends and my fans worldwide, I have never knowingly or wilfully taken any supplements or substances that break any rules. I am not now, nor have I ever been, a cheat. This result has left me completely devastated.”

The news overshadowed the final day of the British Championships in Birmingham.

A number of athletes confirmed their places in the GB team for Russia – notably, Perri Shakes-Drayton (women’s 400m hurdles), James Ellington (men’s 200m) and Anyika Onuora (women’s 200m).
