Aliyu in the statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Israel Ebije, stated that Ibeto had travelled for the lesser Hajj since Monday.

It noted that the deputy governor, who travelled before his letter of intention to leave Nigeria reached Aliyu, left the governor with no choice but to handover the reigns of governance to the Speaker, Adamu Usman.

"The deputy Governor was not in any way snubbed by the governor on the decision to make the Speaker acting governor. Ibeto left the state for Umra without exhausting the necessary procedure of approval from the Governor before travelling," said the statement.

"The deputy Governor is aware his boss was also preparing to embark on a journey too but left. It is therefore instructive to intimate that his hasty decision to leave, left the Niger State Governor no choice but to make the speaker the acting governor."

The statement added that based on the established peaceful working relationship between the governor and his deputy before the latter decamped to the All Progressives Congress, Ibeto was expected to have taken proper permission and Mr. Aliyu was not to be blamed for his deputy’s actions.

According to the statement, Governor Aliyu said he would not deny his deputy his rights and that Ibeto would still perform all his ceremonial duties and the status quo would remain until May 29 when they would hand over to a new government.

In response, the Publicity Secretary of Niger State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Jonathan Vatsa has said that Gov. Aliyu's reason for making the Speaker, acting Governor of the State instead of his Deputy "is a lie".

On a statement released via Vatsa's Facebook page he said "The Niger State Government said it gave the acting Governor to the speaker Hon. Adamu Usman because the Deputy Governor travelled out of the country. This is a figment of imagination and their usual deceit as the said Deputy Governor Alh. Ahmed Musa Ibeto did not travel anywhere this is a lie from the bottomless pit which they are best know for. The speaker being a learned person his in a better position to have advised them. This is a clear indication that the speaker is hungry and desperate for power and protecting his seat from impeachment."
