Gov. Babangida Aliyu Condoles With Victims of TAN's Collapsed Pavilion

Governor Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger state has condoled with those injured after a pavilion collapsed on Saturday, during Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) North Central rally in Minna.

Mr Israel Ebije, Chief Press Secretary to Aliyu, disclosed this to newsmen during the governor's visit to some victims at the IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna.

"As the Chief host, the governor feels highly concerned on the sad incident during the rally. As usual with the Chief Servant (Aliyu), he is going round the hospitals to commiserate with our visitors. The medical bills will be footed by the state.

"Some of the victims of the unfortunate incident have been discharged, while the others are still receiving treatment," he said.

The incident happened when the VIP seating area housing top government officials and chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party suddenly caved in, trapping some of those already seated.

According to Leadership the collapse of the pavilion occurred in the three front rows where the governor of Niger State, Dr Muazu Babangida Aliyu, his wife Hajiya Jummai Babangida Aliyu, SGF Anyim Pius Anyim, Senator Barnabas Gemade (the representative of the Senate president), Minister Maku , deputy governor of Kogi Arc Yomi Awoniyi, deputy governor of Sokoto Mukhtar Shagari, Professor Jerry Gana, Senator Zainab Kure, Senator Philip Aduda, former deputy Senate president Ibrahim Mantu and a host of other dignitaries were sitting.

Over 30 people were injured, mainly the aides of the top functionaries. They were rushed into NEMA and Niger State Government House ambulance to General Hospital, IBB Specialist Hospital, Bay Clinic and top medical facilities all in Minna.

The identities of some of the victims is still not clear but it was learnt that the senator-elect for Niger East Senatorial District, Dr Shem Nuhu Zagbayi, was involved while the commissioner of works Niger State, Alhaji Mohammed Muazu Bawa, Campaign for Democracy activist Mohammed Jabi, and a chief protocol officer with Niger State House of Assembly were said to be involved.

The deputy governor of Kogi State was said to be among those who received minor injury but was able to join the rally after about one hour, an indication that he was not seriously affected by the accident.

It was learnt that the collapse occurred as a result of faulty rods used by the contractors engaged by TAN to construct the pavilion without due consultation with the local organizers who usually used woods for such an occasion.
