Police Arrest 5 in Niger State over Land Dispute

Police in Niger state have arrested five persons in connection with the recent civil disturbances in Jebba North communities of Niger state following which four people sustained gun shot injuries while three residential houses and a private vehicle were razed completely by some rampaging youths some of whom were still at large.


The suspects include Ahmed Timothy, Alhaji Madu Haruna, James Madu and Mohammed Ndaga, all of Jebba village and Kpasuwa village in Mokwa local government area of the state while the victims were James Isah, Joseph Philip,  Madu, Sunday Ibrahim and James Barke , all of whom were from Kpasuwa village.

According to Sunday Tribune, trouble began at about 1pm on 4th June, 2014  when crisis broke out at Jebba North villages of Patizhiko, Liyafu and Ndafu respectively over a parcel of land allegedly belonging to River Basin Authority which was purportedly entrusted into the hands of one man from Gunju to farm on it.

It was further learnt that no sooner had the land been entrusted to the man, that crisis broke out between the people of the neighbouring villages with dangerous weapons like dane guns, sticks, cutlasses , broken bottles, Jerri cans of fuel and matches freely used by the rampaging mob numbering about 200.
