Niger State Gov. To Construct 250KM Roads Before The End of 2014

The Niger State Government has concluded arrangements to complete the 250-kilometre road projects in the twenty five local government areas (LGAs) of the state.

Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development & Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Isah Liman Kantigi, who made this known in Minna yesterday said the state government would complete the 250 kilometres it commenced in the 25 councils by December, adding that contractors who had abandoned their sites have resumed work.

The commissioner said the 250 kilometre roads are spread across the 25 LGAs, adding that each local government already has the sites for their construction, for which the state government had already disbursed N12 billion to the contractors.

He added that most of the contractors had abandoned their sites after they were mobilised to commence work. He also said the construction of the 10 kilometre roads in each LGA was an agreement by the 25 council chairmen of which he was the chairman before he was made the Commissioner of Local Government a month ago.

Kantigi further stated that the Niger State Governor Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, has never interfered in the way funds are disbursed to Councils neither has he initiated projects that should be done by the councils.

He also reacted to an allegation that Governor Aliyu was misappropriating LGAs Funds, saying “It is a capital lie, no Chairman can say there is no money allocated to him and whatever projects are going on in the local government areas is a joint decision of all chairmen of which I used to be one of them before I was made the Commissioner for Local Government.”
