New World Ranking Confirms Nigeria Amongst Most Fragile Countries
Foreign Policy magazine’s annual ranking of the world’s least stable countries (called the Fragile State Index) has just been released.
The ranking, based on twelve metrics (including the prevalence of refugees and displaced persons, access to public services, legitimacy of state and human rights) has placed Nigeria in 17th place.
“Nigeria suffers from uneven development of its economy, corruption, religious tension, Jihadist terrorism from Boko Haram, and a brutal and undisciplined security apparatus. More than 62% of Nigeria's population lives in extreme poverty,” Business Insider’s summary of the ranking states.
It also notes that it is quite surprising that North Korea – “one of the most closed-off and oppressive countries on earth” – managed not to make the top 25.
