Thisday reports that the insurgents targeted a local market, where they fired sporadically into the crowd before proceeding to the town to wreak more havoc.

Gamboru, situated along Nigeria-Cameroon border, is the administrative headquarters of Ngala Local Government Area of the besieged Borno State. It is about 200km from Maiduguri, the state capital and has a population of 237,071 as at the 2006 census.

According to Thisday, Senator Ahmed Zannah, who represents the area in the Senate, confirmed the killings. He said the invaders spent about 12 hours wreaking havoc on the defenceless Nigerians.

He revealed that several other persons were also injured in the attack, while almost all the houses and shops in the town were burnt down.

More Details

Meanwhile suspected Boko Haram gunmen kidnapped eight girls from a village near one of the Islamists' strongholds in Borno State overnight, police and residents said on Tuesday.

The abduction of the girls, aged 12 to 15, followed the kidnapping of more than 200 other schoolgirls by the militant group last month, whom it has threatened to sell into slavery.
