Gunmen suspected to be members of the extremist Boko Haram sect invaded Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, throwing the city into pandemonium.

The attackers, who shot sporadically at anything in sight, arrived at about 7:20 a.m. Friday through an area called Fori, near the Army’s main base. Following a reinforcement and arrival of Nigerian Military fighter aircrafts, the terrorists were intercepted and effectively neutralized.

A statement by the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Chris Olukolade read: "Many of the terrorists and their weapons have been captured.  Four soldiers were wounded and are being treated.  Hot pursuits by land and air operations are ongoing along with cordon and search of surrounding localities.

The military statement which didn't mention any deaths, promised to give more details later, adding that it believed that the terrorists’ attempt was in response to the intensity of attacks on their strongholds in camps at Talala, Monguzum, Sambisa forests, Gwoza, Mandara mountains as well as the general area of Lake Chad, where the "camps have been destroyed and many insurgents killed."

The Niger Times as at the time of this report could only confirm the death of Lt. Abdulraheem Bashir. May his soul rest in peace. May Allah grant him Al-Janna Firdausi. Amin.
