7 Feared Dead, Many Injured During Immigration Aptitude Test Stampede in Abuja

7 persons may have died and several others injured following a stampede at the National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria's Capital.


The unconfirmed incident, is said to have occurred during the 2013/2014 aptitude test for recruitment into the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

An eyewitness, also an applicant at the venue Aaron Moses, told The Niger Times while weeping that he counted about six bodies before being overwhelmed by emotions.

According to Channels Tv, over 56,000 graduates had gathered at the National Stadium as early as 7am on Saturday morning to take part in the recruitment exercise.

The Public Relations Officer of the National Hospital, Mr Tayo Haastrup gave assurance that those injured were receiving medical care, while a few others had been taken to the Garki and Asokoro General Hospital.

The Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment examinations took off in various centres around the country, but due to the State of Emergency declared in 3 states of the country, applicants from Borno State were required to take their exams in Gombe, Yobe applicants in Bauchi, while candidates from Adamawa were to write theirs in Taraba State.

UPDATE: Three pregnant women participating in the Benin zone of the immigration recruitment aptitude test slumped and died immediately inside the main bowl of Samuel Ogbemudia stadium on Saturday. Read more on The Naton.

UPDATE: Hospital authorities at the Rivers government-owned Braithwaite Memorial Hospital in Port Harcourt have confirmed that four candidates died during a stampede at the Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment. Read more on Premium Times
