New Defence Minister Aliyu Gusau Resigns

Nigeria's new Defence Minister, Aliyu Gusau who was sworn into office just last week has resigned.

Report says Gusau took the decision as a result of what the former Minister has considered an act of irresponsibility and grave disregard for his office by Nigeria’s top military chiefs.

Sources have revealed that Nigeria’s top military officers yesterday refused to show up at a joint meeting with Mr. Gusau and his Deputy, Musikilu Obanikoro, a former senator.

SaharaReporters reports that Nigeria’s top military chiefs kept Mr. Gusau waiting for about two days after they were called for security meeting.

It was further reported that all the service chiefs had one excuse or the other regarding making it to the meeting.

Report says the situation took a different twist yesterday when , after having kept Mr. Gusau and Mr. Obanikoro waiting for several hours, the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, showed up alone for a meeting without the other service chiefs.

The source said, "When Air Marshal Badeh showed up, the Minister of Defence told him he was expecting all the chiefs of staff within the military, but Badeh reportedly told him there was no need,"

It was gathered that Badeh also told Mr. Gusau that he alone would be meeting with the Minister as the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), stating that the arrangement was the collective decision of military officers in the country.

Another source revealed that an attempt by the Deputy Minister of defence, Mr. Obanikoro, to intervene was rudely interrupted as Badeh told him to "shut up." "Air Marshal Badeh is said to have called Senator Obanikoro a ‘small boy’ and warned him that the military was not going to be taking orders anymore from bloody civilians like him," another source stated.

Immediately after the squabble, General Gusau (rtd) reportedly suspended the meeting and directed the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry to send his letter of resignation to President Goodluck Jonathan.

It has been reported that several attempts by president Goodluck Jonathan who is worried over the development, to persuade Gusau to rescind his decision failed, as the former Minister remains adamant over his decision.
