Co-Star of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air 'James Avery' Dies at 65
James Avery, who played the character of Uncle Phil in American hit television show Fresh Prince of Bel Air, has died at the age of 65.
Avery’s publicist told The Associated Press that the actor died Tuesday in Glendale, Calif., after complications from an open heart surgery.
News of the veteran actor's death was also broken by his co-star Alfonso Ribeiro.
Alfonso wrote on his Facebook page: "The world has lost a truly special man. I am very saddened to say that James Avery has passed.
"Even though he played by father on TV, he was a wonderful father figure to me in life. He will be deeply missed."
On “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” which helped launch rapper-actor Will Smith to super stardom, Avery played Philip Banks, Will's rich uncle who provides a stable home environment to him.
The show ran from 1990-1996, and is fondly remembered for bringing hip-hop culture to prime time, and for its jaunty rap theme song.
"Rest in peace James Avery."
