President Jonathan at the Officially Commencement Ceremony of The Construction of Zungeru Hydro Electricity Dam in Niger State
The Federal Government has officially commenced the construction of the fourth Hydro- Electricity Dam in Niger State.
According to him, the project was the largest embarked upon by his government to boost electricity generation through long, medium and short term projects.
He said other projects to be embarked upon by the government includes the development of Mambilla and Gurara Hydro- Electricity Dams to promote the economic growth of the country
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan commended the government and people of Niger State for hosting the three Hydro Electricity Dams in Jebba, Kainji and Shiroro and protecting the facility and assured that the HYPPADEC Bill would soon be accented to in order to cater for the communities around the dam sites.
In his address, the Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo stated that the Zungeru Hydro Electricity Dam was part of the transformation agenda of the federal government adding that over N1.72Billion was released to the ministry to invigorate the power sector in the country.
He said the Federal Government had already provided tax holiday and regulatory framework to support investment in the power sector.
The Minister of State in the Federal Ministry of Power, Hajiya Zainab Ibrahim Kuchi said the Zungeru Hydro Electricity Dam was initiated over 30 years ago and was located between Wushishi, Rafi and Shiroro Local Government Areas adding that about 88 communities would be relocated for the project.
She stated that the project would generate 700 Mega Watts of electricity and was awarded to Sino Hydro Corporation, a China-based company, at the cost of over N162Billion, and was expected to be completed in four years.
In his remarks, Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu commended President Goodluck Jonathan for embarking on the project and expressed the hope that the affected communities would be adequately compensated.
He called on the President to, as a matter of urgency, sign into law the HYPPADEC Bill to assist the communities and assured of his government support towards the actualization of the project.
The Governor donated a Horse to the president while the Emirs of Kontagora, Minna and Kagara conferred on the President the traditional titles of Magayakin Kontagora, Jagaban Minna and Dan Hasken Kagara respectively.
