5th Nupe Day Celebrations in Bida, Niger State
Nupe People in Niger State have been described as hard working, enterprising, very cosmopolitan and cultural friendly found in all parts of Nigeria and beyond.
The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Barrister Adamu Usman stated this while speaking as the chairman of the merit award and cultural nite of the 5th Nupe Day Celebration, held in Bida.
Barrister Adamu Usman stated that Nupe land was strategically placed at a link between the north and south of the country adding that this had led to interactions with other groups and assimilation of other cultural influences and ideas.
He said despite this, Nupes have refused to be swallowed up culturally but have defended themselves as a cultural group.
The Speaker used the opportunity to draw attention to the gradual erosion of the value system in Nupe land and among Nupes themselves especially the youths.
Barrister Adamu Usman lamented that the values of honesty, integrity, friendship and truthfulness were fast leaving place in the life of Nupes while increase in the adulteration of culture and urbanization were impacting negatively on the younger generation.
He, therefore, appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, scholars and parents to resolve to protect and impact on the children the tenets handed down to generations of Nupe parents up to the present day.
The Speaker congratulated those honored on the occasion and advised them to serve as models and standard bearers for those coming behind.
He commended the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar for providing the required leadership for the Nupe nation at the time critical in the political and cultural direction of the nation.
