Gov. Abubakar Sani Bello Declares Emergency in Water Sector

Governor of Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, has declared emergency in water sector to end years of water scarcity for domestic and commercial purposes in the state.

In spite of the existence of River Niger where the name, Niger State, is derived from and other surrounding watersheds, the state has over the years been faced with problems of drinkable water.

And paradoxically the state is water-logged.

As part of efforts to finding lasting solutions, Bello in his first week in office undertook facility tour of the state water formations where he also took inventory of available facilities and what is needed to end water scarcity in the state.

A statement by Governor Bellos' Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Ibraheem Dooba, said efforts to end water scarcity in the state that prides itself of having many rivers running through it became necessary following the seemingly insurmountable challenges of water supply to citizenry.

"Niger State is plagued with problems of potable water supply to the citizens hence the need for the new administration to galvanise all necessary actions towards salvaging the situation that bedeviled the people over the years.

"Water supply to parts of the state seems to have defied all known solution hence the state of emergency," Dooba said.

He added: "For example, Minna Waterworks in Chanchaga (Minna metropolis) produces 30,000 cubic meters per day instead of 120,000 that the city needs.

"The All Progressive Congress (APC) administration under the leadership of Abubakar Sani Bello will examine all the issues that are hindering the smooth operations of the sector with a view to finding immediate, medium and long term solutions."

The government, according to the statement, was committed to ensuring that Nigerlites have unlimited access to potable water in whatever locations they find themselves as a way also of preventing water borne diseases.
