INEC Accreditation Exercise a Success - Niger REC

The Niger State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Nasiru Ayilara, has given a pass mark to the mock accreditation exercise conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state.

The REC gave this assessment in an interview with Channels Tv, at the commission’s headquarters in Minna, the Niger State capital.

Mr Ayilara mentioned that some of the challenges experienced during the exercise, which include low turnout and thick fingerprints, would be addressed by the commission before the March 28 presidential election.

The accreditation exercise, which was held on March 7, recorded success in some states while others criticized it.

The REC also stated that the state had successfully distributed about 1.7 million Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), with over 400,000 yet to be collected by their owners.

The Electoral Commissioner noted that the card readers would aid the reduction of electoral malpractice, as only the authentic card owners who had passed through the verification process, will participate in the polls.

According to INEC, the RECs of selected states are tasked on selecting registration areas, with full complement of the PVCs, and they are to also ensure that the register of voters in respect of all polling units in the selected registration area is printed for the conduct of the exercise.
