FG Inaugurates 102 Housing Units in Niger State

The Federal Government, in a bid to reduce the housing deficit in the country, has inaugurated its 102 housing units in Suleja, Niger State, built under the ministerial housing scheme.

Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mrs. Akon Eyakenyi.
The project, funded by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, was inaugurated by the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mrs. Akon Eyakenyi.

A statement by the FMBN on Sunday, said the inauguration of the project was part of steps taken by the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan in the last four years to revamp the housing sector to ensure that Nigerians had access to affordable and quality housing.

The minister, in the statement, said the event was the first of such exercises in the six geo political zones of the country, noting that about 2,600 houses would be constricted at the end of the exercise.

Eyakenyi explained that the housing gap in the country was being reduced gradually by the present administration especially with the drive to build more houses.

She said, “I am happy about the efforts of the present administration to place the housing sector in the epicenter of the transformation agenda in order to fully harness its potential for sustainable and equitable growth.

This pilot ministerial housing scheme which is being carried out in all six geo political zones of the country is expected to deliver about 2, 600 houses when completed and this effort also demonstrates that with prudent management a great deal can be achieved within the shortest possible time

This is one way of achieving affordability for the low income people. If past administrations had shown concern like the President Jonathan administration we would not have so much housing deficit in the country.”

She added that the ministry provided the land, the project was funded by FMBN while the developers were responsible for the actual construction based on specifications and timelines.

The Managing Director of the bank, Gimba Ya’u Kumo, in the statement, said under the arrangement, government provides construction financing and in most cases, unencumbered land for housing development.

The MD said the 102 housing units were made up of 32 units of one bedroom bungalow, 40 units of two-bedroom bungalows and 30 units of three-bedroom bungalows, for off-takers.
