Niger East Bye-election: PDP Withdraws Endorsement of Dr. Zagbayi

Barely a week after the Niger State leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) endorsed Dr Shem Nuhu Zagbayi as its consensus candidate, another aspirant, Hon Abdullahi Musa, has shown interest in the party’s sole ticket for the Niger East Senatorial District bye-election.

In a letter dated 24th July, 2014, Hon. Musa, who was in the of House Representative between 1999 to 2003, intimated the state PDP Chairman that after consulting with stakeholders in the Zone, he had decided to contest.

In response to the letter, the PDP, has backed down on the endorsement of Dr. Zagbayi a former deputy governor of the state.

According to Leadership, the acting chairman of the party in the state, Barrister Tanko Beji gave this indication yesterday when, Hon. Musa visited the party secretariat to submit his letter of intent to contest in the bye-elections scheduled to hold on Saturday, August 16, 2014

He stated that with the entrance of Hon Musa, the party has no option than to open the window for a primary election and ensure that the candidate of the party emerges through democratic process that will be acceptable to all.

He said, "The party will do all that is right for the most sellable candidate to emerge; through this, the public will see us as a true democratic party."

"The party primary must be conducted for both of them; this is because it is mandatory for us to do that; surely due process must be followed in the conduct of the primary," he assured.

It will be recalled that the late Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta, representing Niger East Senatorial District on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) died in Lagos on June 12, 2014 following a protracted illness after which his seat was declared vacant.
