Niger State College of Education Female Students Decry Sexual Harassment From Lecturers
Niger State College of Education female students on Thursday bemoaned the increase rate of sexual harassment from male lecturers of the college.
The students decried this during an awareness programme organized by the association of Women in Colleges of Education (WICE) in Minna.
The students said that most of them fail in examination because of refusal to heed lecturers sexual advancement.
They also complained of harassment and rape from area boys in Shango area where off campus students reside.
The Chairperson of WICE, Mrs Bamidele Ogedengbe, admonished students to report any issue that is contrary to their studies to the school authority for appropriate actions.
She charged them to always dress decently and also avoid walking alone in the night so as to avoid being harassed or raped.
Ogedenge urged them to maintain proper sanitation in their hostels and residents to enjoy good health.
Responding, the COE Minna Vice Provost, Dr Ruth Galadima, said frequent sexual harassment is attributed to indecent dressing by some female students.
She disclosed that a committee to handle student welfare generally had been established to take appropriate sanction against any lecturers guilty of the offence.
Galadima, however, added that some female students offer themselves to lecturers to gain favours, adding that such is not advisable in the institution.
She urged students to face their studies, be security caution in the campus and report unusual movement within and outside the school premises
