Google Doodle Celebrates 96th Birthday of Nelson Mandela

Google marks the 96th Birthday of Nelson Mandela with carving a beautiful, heart-felt doodle animation in remembrance of the 'exquisite man' who taught the meaning of the word 'freedom' to the world, while himself chained as a prisoner for 27 years of his life.

The Google doodle takes us through the different stages of Mandela's struggle we call life, and acquaints you with some of his most powerful quotes that shaped a century.

Nelson Mandela, better known as 'Madiba', who lived most of his life as a commoner and a prisoner was born to the Thembu royal family on 18 July, 1918. He studied law at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Mandela soon became a part of the African National Congress (ANC) and a founding member of its youth league. From there he embarked on his anti-apartheid struggle in the midst of anti-colonial politics which redefined history.

The democratic socialist, anti-apartheid social and political crusader died December 5, 2013.

Friday's doodle commemorating Nelson Mandela's 96th birth anniversary also features caption, search, and share buttons alongside. Clicking on the search button, users are directed to Google search results for Nelson Mandela, while the caption button highlights the quote on the slide in text.
