NCC Bans Selling of SIM cards, Fines MTN, Airtel and Globacom

Nigeria's telecoms regulator has fined mobile operators MTN, Airtel and Globacom a combined 647.5 million naira, banning them from selling SIM cards in March, due to poor service.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) also further revealed that Mike Adenuga, Owner of Globacom, was fined 277.5 million naira. And South Africa's MTN and Airtel, owned by Bharti Airtel, were fined 185 million naira.

"The penalties were imposed because the operators had failed to meet key performance indicators in January," highlighted the NCC.

The NCC will charge each company 2.5 million naira, if the fine is not paid on time.
