Nupe Group Moves For Creation of Edu State
The Nupe Land Community Association for Grassroots Transformation has renewed its agitation for the creation of Edu State, according to its secretary Alhaji Baba Wachiko.
He said the new state, to be carved out of Niger, Kogi and Kwara states, "will cater for the needs of Nupe speaking people" and would also serve as panacea for the socio-political and economic empowerment of the Nupe people.
According to Nigeria Bulletin, Wachiko said "this agitation should not be treated as an exclusive affair of the Nupe speaking people.
"Rather, it is about the present and future status of Niger State which every reasonable Nigerlite should be interested in.
"The creation of a new state from the present Niger State is long overdue.
"This is because Niger State is probably the only state remaining out of all the states created in 1975 that has not been split into two or more states."
He said "we see the creation of the new state as a way of improving the socio-political and economic fortunes of the Nupe people."
