President Goodluck & Northern Governors Meet in Gombe For North-East Economic Summit
President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday kicked off the North-east Economic Summit in Gombe, the Gombe state capital.
President Jonathan who arrived Gombe International Airport at 10:12am in company of the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bamanga Tukur and Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati were received by Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo.
The Niger Times correspondent reports that all shops in Gombe metropolis including schools were shut down, adding that thousands of people across the state came out on mass to welcome the President.
From the airport, the President proceeded to the Government House, Gombe, venue of the summit.
Among those in attendance were governor of Gombe state Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo host, the governor of Niger state and chairman Northern Governors Forum, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Bauchi state governor Mallam Isah Yuguda, Acting governor of Taraba state, Alhaji Garba Umar and other top government functionaries.
Three northern state governors were not present at the summit our correspondent reports. The governors absent include the governors of Adamawa, Murtala Nyako, Yobe , Ibrahim Geidam and that of Borno, Kashim Shettima but were all represented by their deputies
Before leaving Gombe, President Jonathan visited the Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Shehu Usman Abubakar at his palace and was honoured with the staging of a full Durbar to commemorate his visit.
The summit with the theme ‘Accelerating Economic Transformation of the Sub-Region for Sustainable Development’ is the second in a series intended to be rotational among the six states of the North-East.
The summit is intended to promote regional cooperation among the six governors of the North-East, create an enabling environment for sustainable development in the sub-region and forge a common front for accelerating progress, peace and unity.
