NGO Kicks Against Ethno-Religious Violence in Niger State
To promote accountability for ethno-religious violence, a non governmental organization 'Search for Common Ground (SFCG) said it will help youths and communities in Niger, Plateau and Bauchi States to channel their grievances to relevant authorities so as to get solutions.
According to Daily Times, Program Manager of the NGO, Lantana Abdullahi said on Friday during the forum in Minna that the group is out to reach out to 15 communities within Minna the Niger State capital.
According to her: "We are not here to alleviate all their sufferings but to ensure they identify such problems and also to open other channels for such problems to be addressed.
"We are partnering with other organisations so that their grievances can be channelled to the relevant authorities who can be able to help them.
"We are working in Niger, Bauchi Plateau States for the northern region, and in Niger state we are working on a project called promoting accountability for ethno-religious violence.
"We want to enhance integration between them and security agencies and other stakeholders, because in a way we are trying to promote respect for human rights and accountability and to give them a platform to be able to address their community problems and how to engage them especially with other communities and their youths.
"We are creating this platform and we are happy that in most communities. Unlike in Plateau State where we have exclusive communities, in Niger State, they are actually mixed and can live together.
"So, it is not actually the problem of making sure, we have representation of all the religious groups and indeed other ethnic groups are present in the forum so that they can discuss and come up with issues and possibly proffer solution to them.
She charged Christians and Muslims to live in peace.
“Unlike some other states we have been working, Niger State seems to be a role model and we hope they will continue to engage with one another if there are issues, they should sit and talk about it rather than turn to violence.”
