New York City's Silent Restaurant

Known for its fast paced, hustle and bustle lifestyle, New York has a new offering that is the exact opposite.

Eat, the name of the new "trendy" hangout in Brooklyn’s fashionable Greenpoint neighbourhood, has created a buzz in a city where restaurants are often so noisy that the residents and patrons actually complain.

The one rule is very simple: No talking at the table! Customers reserve their dinner seats in advance for the privilege of eating without speaking or hearing a word. The small room only seats 25 guests at a time, all people who will pay $40 a seat to get away from the noise.

I want to provide the opportunity for people to experience the food with a kind of intention and attention to the experience that isn’t usually afforded by a loud meal, especially in New York City,” manager Nicholas Nauman told AFP.

Opinions differ about the experience, but most are pleasant. Some say that they kept wanting to laugh. Others say that it is a purely Zen experience.

Via Capital FM, "Customers who dare break the golden rule during the $40 prix fixe meal are forced to finish their plate on a bench outside. Sitting at long, wooden tables adorned with stoneware, the clients play along while tasting a menu based on local organic ingredients."

We’re bringing our own intentionality to it as well,” explained the restaurant’s chef Elsa Schmitt. Nauman, the owner, had hoped to organize one silent meal per month. However, the concept became so popular that it became a weekly affair.
