He said the theme of this year’s celebration, “Sustainable Food System for Food Security and Nutrition”, was chosen to help in increasing understanding of problems and solutions in the drive to end hunger, as records had it that over 1 billion people worldwide were chronically undernourished.
The Commissioner also said that World Food Day was aimed at encouraging farmers to increase agricultural production and to stimulate national, bi-lateral transactional non-governmental initiatives in the end.
According to him: “The aim was also to enhance the participation of rural people, particularly women and the under-privileged strain in decision making on events impacting on their living condition”.
He noted that the celebration would help to revitalize international and national solidarity, in the fight against hunger, mal-nutrition and poverty, and attract attention to accomplishments in food and agricultural development.
Matane said Niger State was food secured, noting that the state was producing more than what it consumed and advised farmers to key into the programme of both the Federal and State governments aimed at helping them to see agriculture as a business, which he noted would improve their standard of living.
