Nigeria: Police Ban Public Rallies in Kaduna State

The police command in the northern Nigerian state of Kaduna on Tuesday announced indefinite ban on any form of public rally in Kaduna, the state capital.

The Police Commissioner, Mr Olufemi Adenaike gave the order at a news briefing in Kaduna, saying that the ban was endorsed by the State Security Council.

Until further notice, we have decided to put a ban on all rallies at the Murtala Mohammed Square or any other place within Kaduna.

If any of such things will come up at all it has to be discussed thoroughly with the organisers. This is coming out of what happened on Saturday where we had a peaceful rally and a lot of people recorded it as being violent.

Our peace here is very fragile and we do not want to tamper with it. So until further notice, the council has decided that there will be no more rallies, seminars or any other public function in Kaduna,” Adenaike said.
