Grand Theft Auto V Fastest-Selling Entertainment Product of All-Time
The fifth entry in the popular Grand Theft Auto video games series has become the fastest-selling entertainment product of all time, earning a reported $1 billion in sales just three days following its release.
Grand Theft Auto V “racked up $800 million in first-day sales alone.” Take-Two Interactive, the game’s creator, called that a launch-day record for the lucrative gaming franchise.
“We believe this marks the fastest that any entertainment property, including video games and feature films, has reached this significant milestone,” Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick told Claire Duffin of The Telegraph on Saturday.
“Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment,” he added. “We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto V.”
The game, which is available for the Sony PlayStation3 and the Microsoft Xbox 360, took over five years to develop and cost between $200 and $250 million to make, according to Nayak. Its release comes five years after the release of Grand Theft Auto IV and 16 years after the original hit store shelves>
GTA V, which is rated ‘M’ for Mature by the ESRB in the US, “allows players to take on the role of a criminal in a fictional American city, Los Santos,” Duffin said. “Gamers have to complete various missions which include driving, shooting and racing, as well as stealing weapons, holding up cars and killing police.”
Also on Saturday, three UK teenagers were charged with stabbing and robbing a 23-year-old man who had purchased the game less than two hours earlier, according to The Guardian.
Officials from Scotland Yard told the paper that the victim had been hit with a brick, stabbed and robbed of the game, his watch, and his mobile phone, during the incident, which occurred in Colindale, north London, early Tuesday morning. The attackers were between 15 and 18 in age and were released on bail until October.
