Gov. Aliyu Bans Old Boats, Ferries Plying River Niger Following 2 Boats Mishap

Following two recent boat mishaps leading to several loss of lives in Niger State, the state governor, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has banned the operation of old boats, ferries and flying boats on the upper course of River Niger within the state.


The Ministry of Transportation has been directed to ensure full compliance with all safety standards, including the use of life vests by all passengers.

The latest boat mishap claimed 18 lives in Kokoli village, Agwara local government area while in Malale, Borgu local government area of the state, similar fatal boat mishap occurred a week earlier.

Aliyu in a statement signed by the chief press secretary,  Danladi Ndayebo and made available to LEADERSHIP in Minna, said, “The action is intended to ensure that old and rickety boats do not continue to kill valuable lives in the riverine communities”.

Governor Aliyu assured the people of the state especially those that use water transport that every possible effort would be made to ensure that the right lessons are learnt from the tragic loss of lives and that other measures would be put in place to ensure safe water transportation in the state.
