1,656 Niger State Youths Recruited in 8 Months Via SURE-P

The Niger State Government said it had engaged about 1,656 youths in the last eight months in various areas of human endevours under the Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P).

The break down shows that 520 were recruited as sanitary assistants, 486 as Forest Green Guards, while 300 were trained in fisheries, fattening and other agricultural-related practices.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Green Guards in Minna, the state capital, Governor Babangida Aliyu noted that the initiative was conceived to enforce the forestry/wildlife laws that have over time been flouted indiscriminately by people with serious consequent on the environment.

While calling on the 25 local government areas of the state to support the guards to effectively discharge their responsibilities, he said: “Soon, there will be no more forest burning, tree cutting and illegal hunting. We have more progarmmes under the SURE-P that we believe will be of great benefit to the unemployed youths in the state.”

On the recent warning of a serious draught that may be experienced by at least 10 nations, Governor Aliyu said though he did know the names of the nation, he would not be surprise if Nigeria is one of them.

He said: “I know Nigeria may be among the countries and if it is there, for example, the northern Nigeria will be more affected. Therefore, we need to act fast on the issue of our environment.”

Earlier, Niger State Director General of SURE-P, Nuhu Hassan, said that the 486 Green Gaurds drawn from 10 local government areas were to ensure the preservation of the forest by making sure that those who earn their living through degradation of the environment were forced out of business.

Aside, he said the guards would also contribute in intelligence gathering to complement effort by security agencies to enhance protection of lives and property.

According to Hassan, N178 million had been earmarked for the payment of the guards salaries and allowances between now and the time they would be absorbed into the state civil service in January 2015.

He said: “The youths were drawn from 10 local government areas mostly threatened by encroachers, illegal loggers and hunters. The other 15 local government areas will be covered in the second batch which will commence next year.”
