All 36 states in Nigeria Yet to Receive N466billion Arrears from Federation Account in Last 3 Months
The 36 states of the federation are yet to receive arrears of N466billion from the federation account in the last three months.
Faced with the development, which arose from the delay and decline in the release of their share of federally-collected revenue by the federal government, some of the states have resorted to drawing from their savings to meet recurrent expenditures, especially the payment of workers’ salaries.
Officials of some state governments disclosed that they were having problems paying salaries, adding that they had resorted to drawing from their savings to pay the workers to avoid labour unrest.
The Niger State commissioner for finance, Alhaji Mahmoud Kpako Bello, told The Niger Times: “Federal allocation has not been regular for sometime now and I think, for more than six months now, we have had our Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting and agreed on the amount to be distributed, but if we come back what we see in our accounts will be different from what we have agreed on.”
According to him, for the past three months, the states are yet to receive arrears of N121 billion; "there is another N140 billion that should have been distributed in August but for the lack of funds we are told that they would give us N115 billion; even that N115 billion has not come and, this month again, we have a shortfall of over N90 billion and that is why we said we are not going to approve the sharing of the revenue." he said
Bello said: “I think, for Niger State, we have not defaulted till now. Last month when people, even at the federal level, were not able to pay their salaries up to the following month, the state government rose to the challenge and paid the workers.
“After paying salaries, we even gave overheads to all ministries, but from the way things are going from information I have been receiving from some of my colleagues in other states, I think some states are having problems in paying salary because of the dwindling income.”
