NESREA to Begin Sensitization and Enforcement of Environmental Laws in Niger State

The People of Shiroro Local Government Council of Niger State have been warned to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse for the safety of lives and property.

The Secretary of the council, Alhaji Abdulmumini Hakimi Magaji gave the warning while receiving members of the National Environmental Standards, Regulations and Enforcement Agency (NESREA), on a sensitization tour to the area.

Alhaji Abdulmumini Hakimi Magaji said environmental devastation had been attributed to careless usage of gutters, drainages and indiscriminate felling of trees.

He said, henceforth, anybody caught discharging refuse outside the designated areas and deforesting without replacement would face the wrath of the law.

The Secretary, then, directed the Director of Agriculture to collaborate with the forestry section of the local government and the agency for the success of the assignment.

Earlier, the State Coordinator of NESREA, Mr. Ayuba Francis Jacob explained that the agency was the new institutional mechanism for environmental protection charged with the responsibility of enforcing all environmental laws.

He announced that the agency would go round all the local government areas in the state to ensure that all the environmental devastation were reduced to the minimum level.
