Parents Urged to Shun Female Circumcision, Genital Mutilation and Other Harmful Traditional Practices

Parents in Borgu Emirate in Niger State have been called upon to shun the practice of female circumcision and genital mutilation among females in the area.


The State Chairman of International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Barrister Fati Takuma Mu’azu gave the appeal during a sensitization campaign against harmful traditional practices to Borgu Emirate Council.

Barrister Fati Takuma Mu’azu, who said FIDA received report last year of such practices in the emirate, cautioned them to desist for the benefit of the children.

She announced that the Federation of Women lawyers would take measures towards eradicating the menace in the society through advocating for a law to completely stop the practice.

The Chairperson assured the emirate of the women lawyers’ of its continued effort to sensitize the public especially women against the dangers associated with female circumcision and other harmful traditional practices.

In his remarks, the Emir of Borgu, Senator Haliru Dantoro Kitoro III thanked the association for the visit and assured of the emirate’s readiness to partner with the association’s campaign against the dangers of the circumcision in the area
