Court Sentence Man for Attempting to Sell Own Child in Niger State

A Magistrate Court in Minna, Niger State has sentenced a man to five years imprisonment for attempting to sell his 9-year-old son for N10 million.

30-year-old Isah Aliyu who agreed to sell his child to Magaji Atiku, blamed the economic situation in the country for his action, saying he that he could not afford three meals daily for his family.

According to Nigerian Tribune, the incident took place on the 13th November at Pandogeri.

Aliyu was said to have met with Magaji to discuss the trade off where the latter agreed to buy Aliyu’s son.

Both were believed to have initially agreed on N10 million, but Magaji eventually negotiated a sum of N7 million, which the accused agreed to.

Magaji, however, told Aliyu that he would pay half of the price and promised to off set the balance once he was through with  he boy, but Aliyu allegedly disagreed, saying that the N7 million must be paid once.

Convinced that Aliyu was serious about his plan to sell his son, Magaji excused himself under the pretext of going to source for the money but went to report to the police.

The police followed Magaji to the meeting place and arrested the father.
